Quick wins

Pages that are close to the first page and already get seen, but hardly get clicked. The fix is usually the title or the meta description.

The rule
The page ranks between position 4 and 10, has at least 100 impressions in 28 days, and a click-through rate of 2% or lower.
Needs
Google Search Console
ExampleQuick wins

/guides/invoice-software

This page ranks at position 6.4 with 2,140 impressions in 28 days, but only 1.2% of searchers click.

Evidence

  • Average position 6.4
  • 2,140 impressions, 26 clicks
  • Click-through rate 1.2%, ceiling 2%

What you do

Rewrite the title tag and meta description so they match what searchers are looking for.

CTR decoupling

Clicks fall while rankings hold. That pattern is often caused by an AI answer or another search-result feature taking the click. Lastmod reports the pattern, never a claim that a specific feature is doing it.

The rule
Impressions stay at 90% or more of the earlier level, position gets no more than 0.5 places worse, and click-through drops by 40% or more. Compared: the last 7 days against a 28-day baseline.
Needs
Google Search Console
ExampleCTR decoupling

/blog/vat-rates-2026

Impressions and position held, but the click-through rate fell from 4.1% to 2.0% in the last 7 days.

Evidence

  • Impressions 97% of the baseline
  • Position 5.1, was 4.9
  • Click-through rate 2.0%, was 4.1%

What you do

Check the results page for a featured snippet or an AI answer, and consider a title that gives a reason to click.

Content decay

Pages that get clearly fewer clicks than a year ago, and lose more than the rest of your site does. Comparing with the same period last year filters out the season and site-wide trends.

The rule
The page got at least 50 clicks in the same 28 days last year, now gets at least 20 fewer (and 30% or more of them), and lost at least 15 percentage points more than the whole site.
Needs
Google Search Console, with at least 13 months of data
ExampleContent decay

/guides/vat-returns

This page got 64 clicks in the last 28 days, against 180 in the same 28 days last year. Across the whole site, clicks fell by 8% in that period.

Evidence

  • Last 28 days: 64 clicks
  • Same 28 days last year: 180 clicks (−64%)
  • Whole site: −8% in the same period

What you do

Update what is out of date for the search queries the page gets now, and link to it from related pages.

Cannibalization

Two of your own pages show up for the same search terms, so neither gets the full attention. Lastmod lists each pair with the shared terms and suggests one option per pair, based on where the clicks go now.

The rule
A search term with at least 30 impressions in 28 days, on which two of your pages each get 20% or more of the impressions. A pair counts from 100 shared impressions. Merging is suggested only when the second page gets 10% or less of the pair's clicks, and the pair has at least 20 clicks.
Needs
Google Search Console
ExampleCannibalization

/invoice-software

This page and /blog/best-invoice-software both get at least 20% of the impressions for 4 search terms in the last 28 days.

Evidence

  • “invoice software”: 58% and 42% of 1,310 impressions
  • Clicks on the shared terms: 41 and 3
  • Suggested: merge (the second page gets 7% of the clicks)

What you do

If both pages serve the same purpose, merge the blog post into this page and redirect it with a 301; otherwise give each page its own focus.

Technical SEO

The fundamentals search engines rely on, found by crawling the pages in your sitemap. Pages marked noindex are skipped for the metadata checks.

The rule
Six checks, each a fixed rule against the crawled page.
  • Missing title — The page has no title tag, or an empty one.
  • Missing meta description — The page has no meta description, or an empty one.
  • Duplicate title — The same title appears on two or more indexable pages.
  • Missing canonical — The page has no canonical tag.
  • Canonical points elsewhere — The canonical tag points to a different domain.
  • Broken internal link — A page links internally to a page that returns an error status (400 or higher).
Needs
Access to your domain (verified, or through Search Console) and an XML sitemap
ExampleTechnical SEO

/blog/eu-vat-guide-2026

This page has no canonical tag. Without one, search engines have to guess which URL is the main version.

Evidence

  • Found in the latest crawl
  • No canonical tag in the page's HTML
  • Page is listed in your sitemap

What you do

Add a canonical tag that points to the preferred URL of this page.

Pages not showing in search

Pages that can be indexed but did not appear in Google at all. Lastmod checks every page it crawled, and only pages it has known long enough.

The rule
The page returns status 200, has no noindex, is not redirected and has no canonical to another URL, has been known for at least 28 days, and had zero impressions in the last 28 days.
Needs
Google Search Console and access to your domain
ExamplePages not showing in search

/features/recurring-invoices

This page can be indexed and has been known for more than 28 days, but it got no impressions in Google in the last 28 days.

Evidence

  • Status 200, no noindex, canonical to itself
  • 0 impressions in 28 days
  • Listed in your sitemap

What you do

Check in Search Console why the page is not indexed, and link to it from relevant pages.

Few internal links

Pages that hardly any other page on your site links to. Lastmod counts the links it found in the crawl, which is a minimum: it only runs when the crawl covered most of your pages.

The rule
An indexable page, not the homepage, with at most 1 internal link pointing to it in the latest crawl. Skipped when the crawl covered less than 90% of your pages.
Needs
Access to your domain (verified, or through Search Console) and an XML sitemap
ExampleFew internal links

/integrations/accounting-software

In the latest crawl, only 1 other page on your site links to this page.

Evidence

  • 1 internal link found (at least)
  • Indexable, listed in your sitemap
  • Crawl covered 96% of your pages

What you do

Add links to this page from related pages, with link text that says what the page is about.

Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are a weak ranking signal. Expect a better experience for your visitors, not a jump in position.

The rule
On mobile, largest contentful paint above 2,500 ms, interaction to next paint above 200 ms, or layout shift above 0.1, as measured by Google PageSpeed Insights, for pages with at least 100 impressions in 28 days. Real-user data is used when Google has it, lab data otherwise.
Needs
Search Console and Google PageSpeed Insights
ExampleCore Web Vitals

/services/accounting

On mobile, the largest element on this page takes 3.4 seconds to appear.

Evidence

  • Mobile, real-user data
  • Largest contentful paint 3.4 s
  • Limit 2.5 s

What you do

Look at what loads first on the page, usually an image or a font, and make it lighter or load it earlier.

All 34 types, by what you do about them

Every type Lastmod can find, grouped by the kind of proof it ends in. Each page says what it is, how it is found and what you do.

The numbers above are starting values. We tune them as real data comes in.
