What does a search engine see on your homepage?
Enter your domain. We read your robots.txt, your sitemap and your homepage, and show what can be improved technically.
What we look at
- Your robots.txtAre search engines and AI crawlers allowed to read your site?
- Your sitemapCan search engines find your pages?
- Your homepageTitle, meta description, canonical and noindex.
One page, without signing in. A scan of all your pages, with your Search Console data, is part of the trial.
What it reads
- Title and meta description
- Whether they are there and whether their length is within what search engines usually show: a title of 20 to 65 characters and a description of 50 to 160.
- Canonical
- Whether the homepage names a canonical address, and whether that address points to another domain.
- Noindex
- A noindex instruction in the HTML or in the X-Robots-Tag header, which keeps the page out of results.
- Structured data
- Whether the JSON-LD on the page misses a field its type requires.
How to read the result
- Priority comes with each finding
- A noindex on the homepage is high priority; a missing canonical or a description that is too long is low. Start at the top.
- What we saw
- Each finding shows the value the check read, so you can see for yourself what it is based on.
- Not assessable
- If the page looks built in the browser, a missing tag in the raw HTML tells you nothing. The check then says it cannot judge, instead of reporting a fault.
Common mistakes
- The same title on every page
- A template that gives each page the same title makes the pages look alike to a searcher and to a search engine.
- A canonical to the wrong address
- A canonical that points to another domain, or to a staging address, tells search engines that the other site is the real version.
- Counting characters as if they were fixed
- Search engines cut a title by width, not by characters. The ranges here are a guide, not a rule.
What it cannot see
The check reads your homepage only. The other pages on your site can have other problems; a scan of all of them is part of the trial.
Questions
How long should a title tag be?
Long enough to say what the page is about and short enough not to be cut off. Around 20 to 65 characters is a workable range; search engines cut by width, so it is a guide.
Does a meta description help me rank?
Search engines do not use it as a ranking signal. It can be shown as the text under your result, so it affects whether someone clicks.
Does the check run my JavaScript?
No. It reads the raw HTML, as a crawler does on its first pass. If the page looks built in the browser, it says what it cannot judge.
