Technical SEO
Find pages that share the same title tag
Lastmod flags a title that appears on two or more indexable pages of your site, so you can give each page a title that says what is different about it.
What the problem is
A title is the first thing a searcher reads about your page. When two pages carry the same one, nothing in the result tells them which to pick, and search engines get less to go on when deciding which page fits which search.
It often happens quietly: a template that fills in only the site name, a category and its filtered pages, or a page copied and never retitled. Google may also rewrite a title it finds unhelpful, so a distinct, descriptive title is the better starting point.
/services/accounting
- What's going on
- This page and /services/bookkeeping have the same title, “Accounting services | Example Ltd”. Searchers cannot tell from the result which one to open.
- What to do
- Give each page its own title that says what is different about it, with the topic of the page first.
- Evidence
- Found in the latest crawl
- The same title on 2 indexable pages
- Both pages are listed in your sitemap
Lastmod never edits your site. You make this change yourself, then tell Lastmod what you changed.
How Lastmod finds it
The same title appears on two or more indexable pages.
Needs
Access to your domain (verified, or through Search Console) and an XML sitemap
What you do
Open the task
It lists the pages that share the title, so you can see what each one is about.
Write a title for each page
Keep the part that names the topic of that page and put it first. The pages should no longer read the same in a result list.
Mark the task done and enter the new title
Lastmod fetches the page and looks for the new title, then measures the clicks that follow.
How the result is measured
Measuring needs a working Search Console connection; without its data there is no baseline to compare against, so a task made without it gets its implementation checked, not its clicks. About 30 minutes after you mark the task done, Lastmod fetches the page and looks for your new text, and says so when it can't check. It then follows daily clicks for 21 days against the 28 days before, and waits 3 days for Search Console data to settle. The result says how reliable the measurement is; with fewer than 400 impressions in the baseline the answer is “not enough data”, never a percentage. A result is not proof that the change caused it.
