Find broken internal links on your site

Lastmod flags a page that links internally to another page that returns an error status of 400 or higher, so you can point the link somewhere that works.

What the problem is

An internal link is a promise that the next page exists. When it returns an error, a visitor lands on a dead end, and a crawler spends a request on a page that gives it nothing. A few of these on a site that changes often is normal; they pile up unnoticed.

The fix is small and clear: point the link to a working page, or bring back the page it points to. Whether it is worth the time depends on the page the link sits on, which is why the task names it.

What's going on
This page links to /tools/vat-calculator, which returns a 404 error.
What to do
Point the link to a working page, or restore the page it points to.
Evidence

How Lastmod finds it

A page links internally to a page that returns an error status (400 or higher).

Needs

Access to your domain (verified, or through Search Console) and an XML sitemap

What you do

  1. Open the task

It names the page that holds the link, the address it points to and the error status that address returned in the latest crawl.

  2. Fix the link

Point it to the right working page, remove it, or restore or redirect the page it used to point to.

  3. Mark the task done and enter the new link

Lastmod fetches the page and looks for the new link, then follows the clicks on the page. Internal-link changes get the longest measurement window.

How the result is measured

Measuring needs a working Search Console connection; without its data there is no baseline to compare against, so a task made without it gets its implementation checked, not its clicks. About 30 minutes after you mark the task done, Lastmod fetches the page and looks for your new text, and says so when it can't check. It then follows daily clicks for 56 days against the 28 days before, and waits 3 days for Search Console data to settle. The result says how reliable the measurement is; with fewer than 400 impressions in the baseline the answer is “not enough data”, never a percentage. A result is not proof that the change caused it.
