Generative engine optimization (GEO)

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making a site easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT to find, read and cite when they answer a question.

It overlaps with ordinary SEO: a page that cannot be crawled or understood is no use to a search engine or an assistant. It adds things such as whether AI crawlers are allowed in and whether the page answers the question clearly.

The field is young. Which changes make an assistant name a site more often is not settled, so be wary of anyone who promises it.
